Permanent solution needed to keep Thiruvallam clean
Correspondent :
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: This time an overflowing canal will welcome those reaching SreeParasurama temple, Thiruvallam, to perform balitharpanam. The irrigation department, which has started operating pumps round the clock, has managed to bring fresh water from Karamanariver to the stream, which is now overflowing. The department will operate its pump 24 hours till 3pm on Tuesday. However, once the pumping is stopped, things will be back to square one.

The irrigation department has put a great deal of effort to keep the stream clean. They put shutters on either side and set up pumps so that it will function as a water tank with fresh water, which could be flushed out after use. Wire fences of 10ft height were erected on the side of the stream to prevent dumping of waste from road. However, all these could not bring a permanent solution to pollution.

Irrigation department officials said that a permanent solution is possible only if government take steps to introduce breakwater facility at Poonthura. "During high tides, sandbars will be formed preventing flow of water into the sea. This will prevent natural flow of water. Moreover, it will facilitate entry of more polluted water from Parvathy Puthanar, which is connected to the stream at Moonattumukku. Only a permanent breakwater facility at Poonthura could ensure a smooth flow of water," said irrigation department assistant engineer Surajit S R.

The department is also worried about the pollution of Killiriver, another reason for entry of polluted water into the stream. "Proper sewage connectivity for houses on the bank of the river is needed to prevent pollution of Killi. Though there is a sewage treatment plant, it could not be utilized fully due to lack of enough sewage connectivity in the city," officials said.
