Animal cruelty: 3 dogs poisoned, pregnant canine attacked with acid
Correspondent :
HYDERABAD: Over the last one month, many incidents have come to light on how cruelty is being meted out to dogs, with each episode taking a nasty and ugly turn. On Friday, a complaint was lodged in a police station by an activist stating that three dogs in her locality were poisoned and another pregnant dog was allegedly attacked with acid. Only one of the mongrels is alive and that too in a critical state. The incident took place in Yapral in Secunderabad. Based on a complaint from Annamma Joseph, the Jawahar Nagar police station ordered a probe and initiated a postmortem examination.

Annamma, who has been feeding these dogs on a regular basis, noticed that the dogs were howling in pain when she returned home in the evening on Thursday. The pregnant dog was rescued by Archana and Hari of Bhairav Camps but it succumbed to injuries. The poisoned ones were taken to Blue Cross of Hyderabad of which two died.

Humane Society International (HSI) is offering a cash price of Rs 50,000 to those who can lead them to identifying the culprits.

Ashok Kumar, inspector, Jawahar Nagar, confirmed that an FIR was lodged by Annamma. “A case has been registered under Section 429 of Indian Penal Code (that ensures a fine of Rs 50 or more or punished with imprisonment which may extend to five years or both for the miscreants) and Section 11 of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act based on the complaint,” he said.

“It would only take a disturbed mind to torture harmless dogs. At least one case of animal cruelty is reported every week and the way the crime is committed leaves us aghast. This only proves that an immediate increase in penalties against animal cruelty is absolutely necessary. We encourage anyone who has information on this case to come forward. The identity of the informant will be kept confidential,” said N G Jayasimha, from HSI. Anyone with leads are requested to contact HSI on 076749 22044.
