Sangam residents take 'Green Pledge', plant more saplings
Correspondent : TNN
ALLAHABAD: A slew of events were organized to mark World Environment Day here on Sunday. On the occasion, residents vowed to plant more trees for a clean and green Sangam.

Apart from distribution of saplings by several organisations, an awareness campaign was organized by a group of civil defence volunteers, who sought cooperation of masses, non-government and social organisations to protect the environment. Volunteers carrying placards and posters appealed to people to plant at least one sapling in and around their surroundings.

Guinness Book Record holder Rajendra Tiwari, also known as Dukaanji, said that if we want to protect our environment and rivers, we must plant adequate saplings.

He also urged people to boycott polythene to protect environment. "Youngsters must come forward to create green awareness among masses," added Tiwari.

Environmentalists said that the ever-increasing pollution levels is posing a grave threat to our environment as well as endangering human lives.

Volunteers of Prayas organisations spoke about the harmful effects of sound and air pollution. They also appealed to citizens to get their vehicles checked on regular intervals and minimize the usage of washing machines to keep a check on water wastage.
