World Environment Day observed across State

DERGAON, June 5 - The World Environment Day was observed by leading nature organisation AASHRAY in association with Dergaon Jatiya Vidyalaya with a daylong programme today. The programme started with the plantation of saplings, followed by an open meeting.

The meeting was moderated by AASHRAY secretary Sanjoy Kumar Hazarika and the welcome address was delivered by AASHRAY president Biren Chandra Saikia. It was chaired by the principal of Dergaon Jatiya Vidyalaya, Prasanta Barthakur.

Talking on the theme, ‘Our Nature, Our Wildlife, Our Responsibility’ as the appointed speaker, retired vice principal of DKD College, Dergaon, Prabhat Kumar Phukan stated that people should take the responsibility to protect nature. Educationist Jatindra Nath Neog, chairman of the Dergaon Municipal Board Arunav Kalita and retired professor of the College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara, Dr Birendra Nath Bhattacharyya delivered speeches as the guests of honour.

On the occasion, prizes for the All Assam Green Essay Contest, organised by AASHRAY, were also presented. The first prize of Rs 5,000 was bagged by Dr Birendra Nath Bhattacharyya of Khanapara, Guwahati, while the second prize of Rs 3,000 and the third prize of Rs 2,000 were presented to Parismita Khound of Kachamari and Dr Bharati Dutta of Dibrugarh respectively.

The fourth to tenth prizes of Rs 500 each went to Gitashree Barua (Dergaon), Silpika Rajguru (Sivasagar), Rajib Bhattacharyya (Guwahati), Devajani Mahanta (Nazira), Arupjyoti Hazarika (Teok) and Jebin Begum (Chamaguri) respectively. The consolation prize winners are Minakshi Das, Heramba Kumar Dutta, Chayarani Dowerah, Ridhiman Sarmah, Priyadarshan Bora, Sarat Chiring Phukan, Nirupama Bhattacharyya, Chandan Sarma, Gynashree Kotoky and Mouchumi Bora. The special judges’ prizes were bagged by Manju Devi Bhagawati, Dipjyoti Dutta, Manjul Borah, Bidyut Barua, Tonmoyee Kashyap, Plabita Bora, Pradip Saikia, Priyanka Senapati, Nishita Kashyap and Partha Sankar Mohon.

The secretary of AASHRAY announced that a volume on the selected essays would be published soon. The programme ended with the vote of thanks by Dulal Morang.

SONARI: The World Environment Day was observed in Charaideo district on Sunday by the Charaideo district administration in collaboration with the Army’s 63 Field Regiment. A large plantation drive was conducted on the occasion. Saplings were planted at Lachit Udyan and the Circuit House campus here by Tapan Kumar Gogoi, local MLA, Manimala Phukan Borthakur, DC, Charaideo, Mohneesh Mishra, SP, Charaideo, and Colonel Rajiv Ranjan of 63 Field Regiment. Saplings were also planted at various places of Sonari, Mahmora and Sapekhati revenue circles, historical places and premises of schools and colleges, hospitals and government offices.

It may be mentioned here that the World Environment Day was observed with a week-long programme in Charaideo district by the district administration and the Army’s 63 Field Regiment with the main focus on cleanliness.

UDALGURI: The Udal-guri district committee of the Aranya Suraksha Samiti, Assam, in association with a leading nature NGO of Udalguri district, Live Green, planted more than 200 saplings of valuable trees in and around Udalguri town and distributed saplings among the residents of Udalguri and its neighbouring areas on the occasion of the World Environment Day on Sunday.

The programme was initiated at Udalguri Sangaveda Sanskrit Tol by R Sapkota, adviser of Live Green and secretary of the district committee of Aranya Suraksha Samiti, Assam, and Dipanka M Basumatary, secretary of the NGO.

The local people of Dhansirighat in Udalguri district also observed the Environment Day on Sunday by holding an awareness meeting on the office premises of Aranya Suraksha Samiti, Assam. The meeting was chaired by K Saikia, retired teacher.

Dr Hari Charan Das, secretary general of the nature organisation, elaborated on the significance of the day and appealed to all concerned to take note of global warming and go for tree plantation in the interest of the new generation. Charan Boro, Mazbat MLA, was also felicitated on the occasion. In his speech, Boro sought public cooperation to usher in all-round development in the constituency.

Meanwhile, the Udalguri district administration and the Udalguri Town Committee also observed the World Environment Day with a plantation programme. Reports of observance of the Environment Day were also received from Tangla, Khoirabari, Orang, Rowta and Mazbat.
