World Environment Day: After planting saplings, residents of twin cities take pledge to nurture them

Dharwad/Hubballi: Saplings were planted at several places in the twin cities on Sunday to celebrate the World Environment Day. Participants at various programmes on the day also pledge to nurture the saplings.

In Hubballi, the central office of the NWKRTC celebrated the World Environment Day by launching a plantation drive in its premises on Sunday. Managing director R Vinoth Priya stressed on the need for growing and conserving trees. We Care Foundation also planted saplings in Sonia Gandhi Nagar.

Hundreds of children learnt about nature and animals at the "Save Environment for a Better Future" programme held at JSS Shri Manjunatheshwar Central School in Vidyagiri, Dharwad. Exhibitions, plays and cultural events held on the occasion were aimed at highlighting the various causes and effects of environmental degradation and remedies.

Measures to keep the environment clean were explained through the exhibits. Environmentalist Pandit Munji, who was the chief guest, displayed over 500 stamps on environment. Principal Sadhana S congratulated the students and staff for the display.

Massive campaign

Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) assistant commissioner, Santosh Anishettar has said that the green cover in zone number 3 will be expanded. Anishettar was speaking after inaugurating a special campaign to plant 1,000 saplings at Sampige Nagar and BCM Hostel in Dharwad on Sunday. The forestation drive will be carried out through the year. Saplings will be planted at Sampige Nagar, Vikas Nagar, Doddanayakanakopp and surrounding areas. Citizens will be identified to protect the plants.

Citizens adopt saplings

A large number of people in Rajatgiri came forward to adopt saplings and took a pledge to nurture them. At a programme held at the newly constructed garden, they adopted more than 50 saplings. Corporator Shaila Kamraddi had mooted construction of the garden on HDMC land. Mayor Manjula Akkur was present.
