Pipal tree holds significance on World Environment Day
Correspondent : Seema Sharma
Dehradun: Doon Nature Walk (DNW) and Been There Doon That (BTDT), groups held joint citizens walks to the areas in and around district court, dotted with pipal trees, to make them understand multiple benefits of this tree on World Environment Day. Forest Research Institute too held marathon and exhibition to commemorate the day.

Sargam Mehra, member of BTDT told TOI, "Peepal is the key note species of Dehradun. This magnificent tree which gives fruit throughout the year has a lot of birds such as hornbill, butterflies and insects dependent on it for food and home. This tree also envelops religious and cultural significance. In Kumon, women revere this tree when they hold fast for the longevity of their husbands. People also offer prayer to it. Many of these trees have been cut to make parking space in the court itself, however it has been seen that vehicles are parked usually under pipal trees by people due to its shade."

She said the stories of pipal being haunted have deliberately been circulated to protect this tree from misuse.

Member of DNW, Dinesh Pundir was excited to see children, who are having vacation these days, showing lot of interest in this walk.

"Children came to know lot about various species of birds, butterflies and insects who are dependent on pipal. Their perspective toward trees and these living creatures must have broadened and they would look forward to celebrating World Environment Day for next year."

FRI held a cleaning spree and small marathon on Sunday. Dr Savita, FRI director, said, "We celebrated world Environment Day by holding interesting activities. The staff from scientists to employee cleaned the campus.

They ran length and breadth of FRI campus. An exhibition was also held which showcased the research work of our scientists in the realm of environment. We also opened all our museums for the visitors for free of cost."

Deep Prakash Pant, secretary, Pratishtha Foundation which work on education of underprivileged children, took the children to Clement Town lake and explained them about importance of environment through fun games.
