Environment Day: Prakash Javadekar says plant trees to create oxygen bank

New Delhi: Plant a tree and create your own oxygen bank, said India’s Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on Sunday, the World Environment Day. He urged people to click a selfie while planting a sapling.

5 June is celebrated as the World Environment Day by the United Nations’ and every year it is organized around a theme that focuses attention on a particularly pressing environmental concern.

This year the theme is ‘illegal trade in wildlife’ under the slogan ‘Go Wild for Life’ encouraging people to celebrate all those species under threat and take action to safeguard them for future generations.

Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.

“Celebrate World Environment Day on June 5, plant sapling, share pics (pictures) on www.wedselfie.nic.in,” tweeted Javadekar, sharing his own pictures doing the same.

India has an ambitious target of achieving 33% area under forest cover. According to the India State of Forest Report 2015 released in December 2015, at present, India’s is about 701,673 sq. Km which is about 21.34% of the country. When scattered trees are added to the country’s forests, the green cover increases to 24.16% of the land mass,
