VARANSASI: The holy city celebrated the World Environment Day with a series of activities to create mass awareness for environment conservation on Friday.
National Bank for Agriculture and Rural development (NABARD), in association with a Mumbai-based voluntary organisation Yusuf Meherally Center (YMC), organised a programme at PM Narendra Modi's second adopted Naagepur village.
Congress MLA Ajay Rai also planted a tree at his residence o and pledged to plant as many as 10,000 saplings exhorting local residents to come forward and plant more trees. Around 150 people, including children of Roller Skating School at the Lalita Ghat, carried out an environment-awareness rally from Azad park in Lahurabir to Agrasen girls inter college in Maidagin area. Over 20 women of Ganga Kusht Ashram in Rajghat area were taught to prepare paper bags as a substitute to plastic bags by an NGO.
Besides, several events and activities were organised by faculties and institutes of Banaras Hindu University (BHU). The Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development of the university organised a lecture by former dean of faculty of science, Ajeet Sodhi on this year's environment day theme 'Go wild for life'.
Faculty of visual arts, BHU, in association with Bharat Petroleum, organised a drawing competition for children between the age of 5 and 15 years. The winners were given a sapling each along with certificates. A cleanliness drive was also initiated at a pond near Madhuban on the campus under the leadership of BHU registrar, KP Upadhyay. A plantation drive was also carried out there. The regional unit of Mahamana Malaviya Mission also pledged to initiate a plantation drive in Sir Sunder Lal (SSL) Hospital soon.
Several members of the ecological forum of BHU, 'Srishti Sanrakshanam', carried out a cleanliness and plantation drive in the premises of Durgakund temple.
Malaviya Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (MCIIE), Indian Institute of Technology, BHU and Institute of Engineers (IE, India) with support of regional centre of IE jointly organised a theme lecture on 'Illegal Trade in Wildlife' to commemorate the World Environment Day.
