Forest dept. environment day fete at Punalur

The State-level programmes of the Forest Department in connection with World Environment Day will be inaugurated by Minister for Forests K. Raju at a function at the Chemmannur St. Thomas Higher Secondary School in Punalur on June 5.

The function will be presided over by Fisheries Minister J. Mercykutty, who will also deliver the environment day message.

In a statement on Friday, the Forest Department said the day was being observed to promote awareness on the need to protect environment.

Through various programmes like EnteMaram, NannudeMaram, VazhiyoraThanal, Theeravanam, HarithaTheeram and Harithashree, the Kerala Forest Department had planted saplings across the State, the statement said.

Chief of the Forest Force B.S. Corie will welcome the gathering. N.K. Premachandran, MP, will deliver the keynote address. Kodikunnil Suresh, MP; K.B. Ganesh Kumar, MLA; and district panchayat president K. Jagadamma will speak. The programme is being held in association with the Punalur municipality, the statement added.
