Now, animal lovers launch campaign to sterilize strays
Correspondent : TNN
Thiruvananthapuram: Realizing the futility in waiting for the authorities to resolve each and every problem faced by the people, a group of animal lovers from Sreevaraham decided to work on a solution to the increasing stray dog menace in their area. "Every living being has a right to live, therefore we are strongly against the killing of stray dogs. The alternative is to sterilize and vaccinate them so as to control their population," said K C Asok, the leader of the team which is behind the 'Save dog, Save street' drive.

A group of 5 members in the residential area works with the charity organization Street Dog Watch Association (SDWA) run by a UK native Mary Muscroft to capture, sterilize and vaccinate the dogs before releasing them back into the streets.

"At SDWA sterilization of each dog costs us only Rs 800, while other veterinary hospital charge about Rs 2,000 per dog," said Asok. The team already has several volunteers, belonging to different age groups, who are lending their support monetarily or otherwise. The trained team of SDWA makes sure that the no pain is inflicted on the animals while catching them.

The group has also formed a music band called 'Voice for animals', which plans to perform across the city to spread awareness about animal rights. "We hope animal lovers in other residential areas of the city will follow suit to form small cluster groups, who shall assist us in the process of sterilization and in spreading awareness," said Asok.
