There was some trouble in Navegaon-Nagzira tiger reserves due to rains and an accident of machan snapping during the census exercise. We had initial trouble due to sudden rains earlier on Saturday afternoon. We had to clear the roads blocked by fallen trees. Later there was incident of breaking of a machan in Navegaon, in which a volunteer sustained some injuries. Thankfully we had doctors in our backup teams. The injured volunteer was provided immediate medical help and was rescued from the place, said field director, NNTR, RavikantGovekar.
He though held that volunteers at Umarzhari waterhole at New Nagzira had reported of tiger sighting earlier on Saturday evening, but held that figures of census were yet to compiled. He maintained that there was good feedback from volunteers and despite minor troubles, the census was successful.
Honarary wildlife warden, Bhandara, SawanBhahekar, who looked after team of over 35 volunteers in corridor area of NNTR buffer zone informed that there was sighting of two leopards at Jambdi block. Repeated drizzle and cloudy weather however posed repeated hurdles. Having learnt from experience, we were prepared for rainfall this time. All the volunteers had taken the gears to deal with downpour at their machans. We had even advised parking of volunteers' vehicles at few hundred meters from machans, so when it rained heavily they took shelter in their vehicle, Bahekar said.
Field director, Melghat tiger reserve, Dinesh Tyagi held that there was good feed back from volunteers over machan census in MTR. Weather was clear and cool, and night was bright with moon light. Volunteers, some of whom have come from distance places, enjoyed the census exercise, he said. He however held that census figures will be available in couple of days. Wildlife activist Yadav Tarte however claimed that there were initial reports of four tigers sightings in two ranges of MTR. Three tigers were sighted in Dhakna range, while a tiger sighting was reported in Chikaldara range in MTR, he told.
