Correspondent : Naresh Mitra
GUWAHATI: Kaziranga National Park, a World Heritage Site about 250 km from here, has registered a growth in eastern swamp deer population this year.

Eastern swamp deer is a sub-species of swamp deer (barasingha) endemic to Kaziranga.

Kaziranga divisional forest officer Suvashish Das said that the latest population count has shown an increase of 19 eastern swamp deer this year.

According to the population estimate for 2016, a total of 1148 eastern swamp deer was found in Kaziranga. In 2015, the figure was 1129. Except Assam, eastern swamp deer population has almost become extinct elsewhere in the subcontinent.

Eastern swamp called dolhorina in Assamese is counted in terms of its population-size as one of the Big Five wildlife species in the 430 sq km area of Kaziranga. Other Big Five includes rhinos, tigers, elephants and wild buffalos.
