The National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) Southern Bench here has ordered for a CB-CID probe into the alleged sale of solid bio medical waste by hospitals, after it was brought to its notice that the waste from a Chennai-based private hospital was being sold at Rs. 49 a kg to a vendor.
When the case over the solid bio medical waste disposal at hospitals came up for hearing before the Bench comprising Justice P. Jyothimani and expert member P.S. Rao, applicant Jawaharlal Shanmugam submitted that bio medical waste was being sold by a private hospital to a vendor.
Against rules
The applicant alleged that the sale of solid bio medical waste from hospitals was in contravention to rules and pleaded for action in the issue. He also provided photographic evidence to assist his claim.
Mr. Shanmugam submitted that all hospitals would have to enter into an agreement with the Common Treatment Facility Provider set up by the State government as per the Biomedical Waste Management Rules.
The Bench directed the State government to initiate a CB-CID probe into the issue of sale not only in the said hospital but also by other hospitals involved in the illegal practice.
Seeks more time
Earlier, the State government sought additional time to submit its report incorporating the suggestions of the applicant in the new Bio Medical Waste Management Rules.
The case was posted for July 15.
